Kathi Schulz arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von Malerei und Technologie und erobert damit aktuell das Wissensfeld rund um Künstliche Intelligenz. Kann KI kreativ sein?  Steckt in digitalen Technologien Kunst? Wo trifft Technik auf Kunst und Kunst auf Technik? Um diesen zukunfts-gestaltenden Fragen nachzugehen, verlässt die Absolventin der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf die Stadt und fängt diesen Herbst ihren Master of Fine Arts an der Kunsthochschule California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles an. Ihr Ziel: Das Thema KI für alle zugänglich machen und das künstlerische Potenzial hervorholen. Kurz vor ihrem Umzug haben wir sie für ein Interview getroffen, in dem sie uns einen Einblick in ihre Arbeit gibt, über die digitale Zukunft spricht und erklärt, wieso ein digitales Bewusstsein in der Gesellschaft so wichtig ist.

Wie würdest Du Deinen künstlerischen Ansatz beschreiben? Ich arbeite an der Schnittstelle von Malerei und Digitaltechnologien. Ich beschäftige mich mit der Frage “Wie kann Malerei aus dem analogen Bereich gelöst und mit digitalen Formaten verbunden werden?”. Dabei hinterfrage ich, ob Malerei an analoge Medien und Prozesse wie Pinsel oder Leinwand gebunden sein muss. Wie kann man diese normativen Strukturen auflösen und wie kann das Potenzial von Digitaltechnologien durch Kunst erweitert werden?

Du beschäftigst Dich insbesondere mit dem Thema KI – Künstliche Intelligenz. Wie kam es dazu und was reizt dich an diesem Thema? KI ist immer noch ein Nischenthema. Das schockiert mich. Künstliche Intelligenz umgibt uns, egal wo wir hinblicken. Sie ist Teil unseres Alltags und wir machen jeden Tag Gebrauch davon. Ich finde es faszinierend, dass es so wenig Auseinandersetzungen mit der Thematik und keine richtige Plattform dafür gibt. Die Leute beschäftigen sich nicht genug mit Thema. Dieser fehlende Diskurs ist auch ein Grund für die vielen negativen Konnotationen, die sich in der Gesellschaft verfestigt haben.  

Um Künstliche Intelligenz so einsetzen zu können, dass sie dem Individuum und auch gesellschaftlichen Strukturen zum Vorteil ausgelegt ist, muss es einen Diskurs über diese Thematik geben. Um mit all den Herausforderungen meiner und nachkommender Generationen, wie zum Beispiel der Klimakatastrophe, entgegentreten zu können, ist ein allumfassendes Bewusstsein dafür unumgänglich.  

Die Schnittstelle von Kreativität und KI-Technologien werden in vielen Bereichen erforscht, sei es in der Kunstszene, der Neurowissenschaft oder der KI-Forschung selbst. Kann Künstliche Intelligenz wirklich kreativ sein? Fragen dieser Art können nur durch einen interdisziplinären Ansatz beantwortet werden, genau deshalb ist diese Schnittstelle so interessant für mich.

Neben der Kunst: Was sind Deine Leidenschaften? Die Berge, Wandern und Snowboarden.

Du planst, Deinen Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art + Technology and Integrated Media an der CalArts California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles zu absolvieren. Warum LA und was erhoffst Du dir von der Zeit? In Düsseldorf oder in der Akademie gibt es noch keinen richtigen Bereich für das, was ich mache. Ich habe mich bisher eigenständig mit digitalen Technologien und neuen Medien beschäftigt. Ich möchte mit meiner Arbeit weiterkommen. In Deutschland sind wir mit der Digitalisierung etwas hinterher. LA hat eine sehr interessante Kunstszene. Ich ziehe aber vor allem aufgrund der Uni nach Los Angeles. Sie haben dort genau den Master für das Gebiet, in dem sich meine künstlerische Arbeit bewegt. Es passt perfekt.  

Viele Leute dort arbeiten mit neuen Technologien mit Fokus auf einen künstlerischen Ansatz. Ich bin dann nicht mehr nur diejenige, die die Technologie und den Arbeitsprozess erklären muss, sondern bekomme Input. Ich weiß, dass es dort eine größere Szene für die Schnittstellen Tech und Art gibt. Dass die Uni in LA ist, ist nur ein guter Zufall. Ich freu mich auch darauf wieder in einer großen Stadt zu wohnen. Der Master dauert zwei Jahre. Was ich danach mache, habe ich noch nicht geplant. Ich werde mich nach meiner Karriere richten. Vielleicht erfordert sie, dass ich in LA bleibe, vielleicht aber auch nicht.

Mit welchem Künstler, tot oder lebendig, würdest Du am liebsten zusammenarbeiten? Mit Hilma af Klint, einer schwedische Malerin.  

Welche Orte in Düsseldorf inspirieren Dich als Künstlerin? Natürlich die Akademie, mein Atelier und überall dort, wo ich meine Freund*innen treffen und über Kunst sprechen kann. Dann ist der Ort mir egal.

Düsseldorf als Kunstwerk: Wie würde das aussehen? Es wäre ein riesiger Segelschuh, weil Düsseldorf so spießig ist.

Kathi Schulz works at the intersection of painting and technology and is currently conquering the field of knowledge surrounding artificial intelligence. Can AI be creative? Is there art in digital technologies? Where does technology meet art and art meet technology? In order to pursue these questions that will shape the future, the graduate of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is leaving the city and starting her Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles this autumn. Her goal: to make the subject of AI accessible to everyone and to bring out its artistic potential. We met Kathi for an interview in which she gives us an insight into her work and explains why digital awareness is so important in society. 

How would you describe your artistic approach? I work at the intersection of painting and digital technologies. I deal with the question “How can painting be detached from the analogue realm and connected with digital formats?”. In doing so, I question whether painting must be bound to analogue media and processes such as brush or canvas. How can these normative structures be dissolved and how can the potential of digital technologies be expanded through art? 

You are particularly concerned with the topic of AI – artificial intelligence. How did this come about and what attracts you to this topic? AI is still a niche topic. That shocks me. Artificial intelligence surrounds us everywhere we look. It is part of our everyday life, and we make use of it every day. I find it fascinating that there is so little discussion of the topic and no real platform for it. People don’t engage enough with the issue. This lack of discourse is also a reason for the many negative connotations that have become entrenched in society. In order to be able to use artificial intelligence in such a way that it is designed to benefit the individual and also social structures, there must be a discourse on this topic. 

The intersection of creativity and AI technologies is being explored in many fields, be it in the art scene, neuroscience, or AI research itself. Can artificial intelligence really be creative? Questions of this kind can only be answered through an interdisciplinary approach, which is exactly why this interface is so interesting to me. 

Besides art, what are your passions? The mountains, hiking and snowboarding. 

You plan to complete your Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art + Technology and Integrated Media at CalArts California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. Why LA and what do you hope to gain from this time? There is no real space for what I do in Düsseldorf or at the Kunstakademie yet. So far, I’ve been working independently with digital technologies and new media. Many people in LA work with new technologies with a focus on an artistic approach. I am then no longer just the one who has to explain the technology and the working process but get input. I know that there is a bigger scene there for the intersection of tech and art than here in Germany. 

I’m also looking forward to living in a big city again. The Master’s lasts two years. I haven’t planned what I’ll do afterwards. I’ll be guided by my career. Maybe it requires me to stay in LA, maybe not. 

Which artist, dead or alive, would you most like to collaborate with? With Hilma af Klint, a Swedish painter. 

What places in Düsseldorf inspire you as an artist? The academy, of course, my studio and anywhere I can meet my friends and talk about art. Then the place doesn’t matter to me. 

Düsseldorf as a work of art: What would that look like? It would be a huge sailing shoe because Düsseldorf is so stuffy.
