Ein schummriges Treppenhaus im Zakk, im Hintergrund wabert Musik und auf der Treppe treffen wir Selena. Wollten wir schon länger, hat aber nie geklappt. Jetzt endlich, im Rahmen des Fem_Pop Festivals, ist es soweit und sie grinst uns zufrieden an. Gerade hat sie ein Konzert mit ihrer Band „Sanescere“ gespielt und jetzt Zeit, um mit uns zu sprechen. Über Musik, Familie und eine kleine Vision für Düsseldorf.

Wie war’s? Schön war’s, trotz technischer Probleme hat es sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Und ich fand die Menschen schön und die Atmosphäre auch. Es ist eine Ehre für so ein cooles Ding zu spielen, wie Fem_Pop. Ich bin begeistert von allem, es hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht.
Viele Leute haben dich heute hier zum ersten Mal kennengelernt und gehört. Für die, die nicht dabei waren: wer bist du, bzw. wer seid ihr? Wir sind Sanescere und wir machen Musik, auch beruflich – und das macht uns sehr viel Spaß. Wir hoffen, damit sehr weit zu kommen. Ich bin hier aufgewachsen bei meinen Eltern. Und die beiden sind auch meine Bandmitglieder, by the way – wir sind eine Band und eine Familie.
Wie kam es dazu – Spontane Entscheidung am Frühstückstisch oder von langer Hand geplant? Die Ursprünge waren schon ganz früh. Ich hab schon immer viel Musik mit meinem Papi gemacht, das war das erste, was ich wollte: Gitarre spielen, singen und einfach mit Papa Musik machen. Das hat sich dann gefestigt und dann haben wir gesagt: „So, jetzt reicht’s, jetzt kommt ein eigenes Projekt und das wird fett“. Dann ist 2016 unser erstes Album entstanden und jetzt sitzen wir schon am zweiten.
Lass uns doch mal „reinhören“. Wie klingt eure Musik, wie würdest du euren gemeinsamen Sound beschreiben? Größtenteils Independent, mit ein bisschen Elektroeinflüssen – bzw. so wie heute, mit vielen Elektroeinflüssen eigentlich. Das Schöne bei uns ist, dass wir uns nie gleich anhören, wir können die eine Show so spielen wie heute und die andere dann ganz rockig. Wir sind frei. Momentan ist es auf der „Psychedelic-Elektro-Schiene“ gelandet, trotzdem mit Pop-Einflüssen und allem was uns so gefällt.
Viele Musiker nennen als Inspiration ja häufig die Plattenkiste ihrer Eltern. Du machst jetzt Musik mit deinen Eltern. Wie ist das da? Ich bin stark geprägt von David Bowie und Freddie Mercury und dem ganzen Spaß. Die Red Hot Chili Peppers und die Beatles – das ist meine Musik gewesen, schon immer. Ich entdecke viel Neues und das kriegt mein Papa dann natürlich mit und es gefällt ihm meist. Wir verstehen uns da musikalisch extrem gut.
Habt ihr aktuell eine gemeinsame Lieblingsband? Uhhh schwierig. Wir hören wie gesagt viel Bowie und Queen. Aber auch die neuen Sachen von Depeche Mode, weil die ja auch deutlich elektronischer sind. Ich persönlich finde Half Moon Run ganz geil.
Du hast es eben schon angesprochen: Musik ist euer gemeinsamer Job. Wie funktioniert das? Extrem gut. Wir sitzen jeden Tag dran, haben für den Gig heute zum Beispiel sehr viel geübt. Gleichzeitig ist es ein freies Konzept, das wir haben – das heißt, wir spielen jede Show anders. Trotzdem sitzen wir natürlich jeden Tag zusammen, die beiden machen das auch noch anderweitig beruflich, um eben auch genug Geld damit zu verdienen. Komplett können wir nur von Sanescere aktuell noch nicht leben, aber ich hoffe, dass das bald der Fall sein wird. Ich fotografiere auch noch beruflich. Aber das Hauptaugenmerk liegt darauf, dass unsere Band groß wird. Das ist unser gemeinsamer Traum.
Und wie gut klappt das mit der Harmonie? Als Band und Familie? Gut! Meine Eltern sind nicht nur meine Eltern, sondern wirklich auch meine besten Freunde. Wir teilen uns die Arbeit auch gut auf: ich mache zum Beispiel den ganzen Social Media Kram, die Produktion der Songs liegt bei meinem Papa. Mit der ganzen Technik und den Computern und dem Hokus-Pokus dahinter kenn‘ ich mich nicht so aus. Ich schreib meine Texte und meine Melodien und bin damit ganz happy. Das geht alles gut Hand in Hand.
Trotzdem gibt’s sicher auch immer mal Momente, wo es hakt…Ja, aber das kann man nicht so auf Themenfelder festmachen. Das hängt meist damit zusammen, wenn einer von uns dreien rumzickt, weil er oder sie einen schlechten Tag hat. Zum Glück sind wir musikalisch auf einer Ebene – natürlich hat jeder einen etwas anderen Einschlag, aber wir finden da super gut zusammen. Über Musik streiten wir uns tatsächlich kaum.
Sondern arbeitet lieber gemeinsam daran. Wie geht’s jetzt weiter? Wir werden Ende dieses Jahres unser nächstes Album rausbringen, es wird viel elektronischer. Wir probieren uns aktuell noch aus und sind immer für eine Überraschung zu haben, aber: es wird auf jeden Fall gut. Ich freue mich sehr.
Wir sind jedenfalls gespannt! Lass uns noch kurz über Düsseldorf sprechen. Du bist seit deiner Kindheit hier, dir scheint’s also zu gefallen. Was schätzt du an der Stadt am meisten? Die Vielseitigkeit. Ich hab hier alles. Wenn ich reiche Menschen sehen will, gehe ich auf der Kö spazieren. Wenn ich Kultur haben möchte, kann ich das jederzeit haben. Ich find die Museen toll. Es gibt eine gute Musikszene, die ist zwar noch ausbaufähig – aber das ist ja eigentlich alles. Ich bin sehr happy hier zu sein. Ich schätze den Marktplatz und die Rösterei Vier sehr. Da trinke ich meinen Kaffee und das ist einer meiner Lieblingsorte in Düsseldorf.
Gibt’s denn trotzdem irgendwas wo du sagst: das braucht die Stadt noch? Auf der musikalischen Seite: mehr Newcomer-Förderung. Mehr Livemusik. Mehr Straßenmusik, nicht nur die üblichen Verdächtigen. Es sind ja immer die gleichen. Ich spiel auch manchmal auf der Straße, leider nicht oft genug. Das fände ich wirklich schön: noch mehr Musik in den Straßen und überhaupt – Musik sollte verbreiteter sein in Düsseldorf.

A dimly lit staircase at the (music venue) Zakk, music in the background and we meet Selena on the stairs. It’s been in the works for a while. Now it’s finally happening, in the context of the Fem_Pop Festival, and she smiles at us happily. She just played a concert with her band „Sanescere“ and now has time to talk to us. About music, family and her vision for Düsseldorf.
How was it? It was great, despite some technical problems it was a lot of fun. And I liked the people and the atmosphere. It’s an honour to play for such a cool thing like Fem_Pop. I am thrilled about it all, it was a lot of fun.
A lot of people got to know you here for the first time today. For those who weren’t there: who are you? We are Sanescere and we make music, also professionally – and we enjoy it very much. We hope to go very far with it. I grew up here with my parents. And they are also my band members, by the way – we are a band and a family.
How did this happen – a spontaneous decision at the breakfast table or was it long planned beforehand? The seeds were sown very early. I always made a lot of music with my dad, that was the first thing I wanted: To play guitar, sing and just make music with my dad. It developed over time and then we said: „That’s enough, now we’re going to have our own project and that’s going to be huge“. Then our first album was made in 2016 and now we’re already working on the second one.
Let’s have a listen. How does your music sound, how would you describe your sound? Mostly independent, with a bit of electro influences – or as today, with a lot of electro influences actually. The nice thing about us is that we never sound the same, we can play one show like the one today and another one with lots of rock elements. We are free. At the moment, we are on the „psychedelic-electro track“, but also include pop influences and everything else we like.
Many musicians often call their parents‘ record box their inspiration. You make music with your parents. How is that then? I am strongly influenced by David Bowie and Freddie Mercury and all that fun stuff. The Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beatles have always been my music. I discover a lot of new things and of course my dad gets to know that stuff and he usually likes it. We get along extremely well musically.
Do you currently have a collective favourite band? Uhhh difficult. As I said, we hear a lot of Bowie and Queen. But also the new stuff from Depeche Mode, because it’s much more electronic. Personally, I think Half Moon Run is great.
You just mentioned it: You are working in music together. How does it work? Extremely well. We work together every day, we practiced a lot for the gig today, for example. At the same time, we have a free concept – that means we play every show differently. Nevertheless, we are working together every day, of course, and the two of them make music professionally as well, in order to earn enough money with it. We can’t live entirely from what we make with Sanescere at the moment, but I hope that will soon be the case. I also photograph professionally. But the main focus is on making our band a big success. This is our joint dream.
And how well do you get on? As a band and family? Well! My parents are not only my parents, but also my best friends. We also divide the work well: for example, I do all the social media stuff, the production of the songs is up to my dad. With all the technology and the computers and the hocus-pocus behind it, I don’t know much about that. I write my lyrics and my melodies and am very happy with that. Everything goes well hand in hand.
Nevertheless, there are certainly always some tricky moments… Yes, but that’s not down to something specific. It’s usually related to when one of the three of us is cranky because he or she has a bad day. Fortunately, we are musically on one level – of course each of us has a slightly different angle, but it works very well together. We don’t really argue about music.
What’s the next step? We will release our next album at the end of this year, it will be much more electronic. We are still trying things out and are always ready for a surprise, but: it will be good in any case. I am very happy.
We are definitely curious! Let’s talk briefly about Düsseldorf. You’ve been here since your childhood, so you seem to like it. What do you like most about the city? The versatility. I have everything here. When I want to see rich people, I go for a walk on the Kö. If I want to have culture, I can do that at any time. I love the museums. There is a good music scene, however, there is room for improvement- but that’s actually all. I am very happy to be here. I really appreciate the Marktplatz and the Rösterei Vier. That’s where I drink my coffee and that’s one of my favourite places in Düsseldorf.
Is there anything where you say: the city still needs that? On the musical side: more support for newcomers. More live music. More street music, not just the usual suspects. They are always the same. I also play on the street sometimes, unfortunately not often enough. I would really like that: even more music in the streets and in general – music should be more widespread in Düsseldorf.
