Düsseldorf offers a surprising selection of alternative cinemas, and here’s why: “Düsseldorfer Filmkunstkino GmbH”. When Udo Heimansberg and Kalle Somnitz founded the initiative, it only consisted of one cinema: Metropol. In the meantime, it has grown to five members — Bambi, Cinema, Metropol, Atelier and Souterrain — and has beaten its competitors, who were trying to establish a competitive arthouse-concept in the city. Showing documentaries, arthouse movies, and international productions, Filmkunstkinos presents Düsseldorfers with a beautifully nostalgic alternative to the 3D-multiplex cinemas spanning the country. Sabrina Weniger has caught their unique atmosphere on camera.
