Stellt euch vor, es ist 2022 und Frauen sind im Musikbusiness immer noch gnadenlos unterrepräsentiert. Leider wahr. Leider schlimm. Auch wenn Superstars wie Beyoncé, Lizzo oder auch Kate Bush an der Spotify-Spitze stehen: Schaut man mal etwas genauer hin bei Bands oder Festivals Bookings, sind FLINTA in der Minderheit. FLINTA meint Frauen, Lesben, intersexuelle, nicht-binäre, trans und agender Personen und damit all jene, die aufgrund ihrer Geschlechtsidentität patriarchal diskriminiert werden. Für deren Sichtbarkeit engagiert sich die Düsseldorfer Konzertreihe fem_pop. Gegründet wurde sie vom gleichnamigen Kollektiv, das es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, FLINTA wortwörtlich eine Bühne zu geben und sie in der Musikszene zu vernetzen. Support ist das Stichwort – nicht nur zum Anheizen bekannter Bands und Solo-Acts, sondern im gemeinsamen Wachstum und Widerstand gegen patriarchalische Strukturen. ”Bildet Banden!“ sagt auch die Düsseldorfer Musikerin Selena, die aktuell mit ihrem Solo-Projekt Modular durchstartet. Sie und drei weitere wahnsinnig tolle Künstlerinnen der Düsseldorfer Musikszene stellen wir Euch hier und in THE DORF THE MAG No. 6 vor – von Pop bis Rap, von Psychedelic zu Electronic. „Bildet Banden!“

Als „Gänseblümchen unter den Schattengewächsen“ beschreibt Selena Hamers die Düsseldorfer Musikszene, in der sie sich umtriebig und zigarettenrauchend tummelt. Modular heißt Selenas erstes Soloprojekt, bei dem sie die volle kreative Kontrolle hat – und das neben ihrem Job im Punk-Store Pick Up auch exzessiv auslebt. Klanglich bewegt sich die 24-Jährige auf elektronischer Flur mit deutschen Texten und befeuert das Release ihrer Debüt EP im letzten Jahr aktuell mit neuem Material. 

Stell Dich vor. Wer bist Du und was machst Du? Ich bin Selena und mache Musik unter dem Namen Modular. 

Dein Stil in einem Satz? Klingt wie Düsseldorfer Schule nur in ängstlich und auf deutsch.

Woran arbeitest Du gerade? Seit der Veröffentlichung meiner EP letztes Jahr arbeite ich an weiteren Stücken und daran, immer neue Inspiration zu finden, um sie in meinen Sound zu inkorporieren. 

Wie beschreiben Dich Deine Fans?  Hoffentlich treffender als ich.

Wenn Du keine gerade Musik machst, dann… Arbeite ich unter anderem bei Pick Up in der Altstadt als Fotografin oder rauche ca. 23 Zigaretten am Tag. Weil nämlich: Rauchen fetzt. 

Welche Erinnerungen hast Du an Deinen allerersten Auftritt? Schule mit der Schülerband. Ich weiß noch genau, wie aufgeregt ich war. Ganz vielleicht musste ich mich vor Aufregung übergeben (das war vor dem Konzert). Wir haben Word Up von Cameo gespielt. Ich bin froh, keine Aufnahmen davon zu haben.

Was sind die Herausforderungen einer FLINTA Person in der Musik? Ich bin der Meinung, dass sich momentan gesellschaftlich viel verändert. Nach wie vor müssen wir aber an der Sichtbarkeit von FLINTA in der Kunst z.B. der bildenden Künste und Musik arbeiten. Mit dem Begriff ‚Challenge‘ tue ich mich schwer, weil es nicht darum geht, dass FLINTA Personen eine Art ‚Extra-Runde‘ laufen müssen und sonst alles genau so wäre wie bei nicht-FLINTA Personen. Die “Herausforderungen” bestehen nicht nur auf oder vor der Bühne, sondern sind omnipräsent und bestimmen den Alltag. Genau wie die Gesellschaft selbst, hat auch die Musikbranche mit Objektifizierung, Lookismus und anderen Formen des Sexismus zu kämpfen. Auch wenn sich gerade vieles in die richtige Richtung bewegt, sind wir noch lange nicht dort, wo wir hinwollen. 

Was hat sich in den letzten Jahren für FLINTA in der Musik getan? Ich glaube es entwickelt sich momentan ein Bewusstsein für Gleichberechtigung und es sprießen immer mehr tolle (FLINTA) Kollektive wie z.B. Cumming oder fem_pop aus dem Boden, die die Szene zu einer besseren machen. Die Verantwortung liegt aber nicht ausschließlich bei Kollektiven, die mit viel Aufwand und Herzblut für Sichtbarkeit und Repräsentation kämpfen. 

Wie kann man FLINTA mehr Sichtbarkeit und Reichweite geben? Die Verantwortung liegt nicht primär bei eben genannten Kollektiven, sondern vor allem bei Labels, Venues und weiteren Institutionen. Im Jahr 2022 mit einem breiten Bewusstsein für die Thematik kann es nicht allein in der Hand der Unterdrückten liegen, eine Gleichstellung zu erwirken. Bis dahin: bildet Banden. 

Was ist das Schrägste, was Dir bei Auftritten passiert ist? Ich habe mit meinen Eltern Musik gemacht und es war cool! 

Wie würdest Du die Düsseldorfer Musikszene beschreiben? Das Gänseblümchen unter den Schattengewächsen. 

Wo trifft man Dich in Düsseldorf? In den Wäldern in und um Düsseldorf, bei der R4 auf einen Kaffee und nicht selten im zakk.

Mit wem würdest Du gerne ein Bier trinken? Ich würde gerne wieder einen Ort wie das Stone in Düsseldorf haben, wo Indie und Rock läuft. Da würde ich dann auch ein Bier mit mir selbst trinken. Alternativ mit Susanne Ciani.

Imagine it’s 2022 and women are still mercilessly underrepresented in the music business. Sadly this is true. Even if superstars like Beyoncé, Lizzo or Kate Bush are at the top of Spotify: If you take a closer look at bands or festival bookings, FLINTA are in the minority. FLINTA means women, lesbians, intersexual, non-binary, trans and agender people and thus all those who are patriarchally discriminated against because of their gender identity. The Düsseldorf concert series fem_pop is committed to their visibility. It was founded by the collective of the same name, which has made it its task to literally give FLINTA a stage and to network the artists in the music scene. Support is the keyword – not only to fuel wellknown bands and solo acts, but in collective growth and resistance against patriarchal structures. “Unite & fight!” also says Düsseldorf musician Selena, who is currently taking off with her solo project Modular. In this issue, we present her and three other incredibly great artists from the Düsseldorf music scene – from pop to rap, from psychedelic to electronic music. Sounds and styles as diverse and experimental as each of their souls. Read and listen for yourself – our forever girl crushes.

“Unite & fight!”

A “daisy among the shadowy plants” is how Selena Hamers describes the Düsseldorf music scene, in which she hangs out and smokes cigarettes. Modular is the name of Selena’s first solo project, in which she has full creative control – and also lives it out excessively alongside her job at the punk store Pick Up. The 24-year-old’s sound is electronic with German lyrics and she is currently fuelling the release of her debut EP last year with new material.

Introduce yourself. Who are you and what do you do? I’m Selena and I make music under the name Modular.

Your style in one sentence? Sounds like Düsseldorfer Schule only in angsty and in German.

What are you working on at the moment? Since the release of my EP last year, I’ve been working on more tracks and finding new inspiration to incorporate into my sound.

What memories do you have of your very first gig? School with the school band. I remember exactly how excited I was. Quite possibly I threw up from excitement (this was before the concert). We played Word Up by Cameo. I’m glad I don’t have any recordings of it.

What are the challenges of being a FLINTA person in music? I think that a lot is changing socially at the moment. But we still have to work on the visibility of FLINTA in the arts, e.g. visual arts and music. I have a hard time with the term “challenge” because it is not about FLINTA people having to run some kind of “extra lap” and otherwise everything would be exactly the same as for non-FLINTA people. The “challenges” do not only exist on or in front of the stage but are omnipresent and determine everyday life. Just like society itself, the music industry has to deal with objectification, lookism and other forms of sexism. Even though a lot is moving in the right direction right now, we are still far from where we want to be.

What has happened in music for FLINTA in the last few years? I think there is an awareness of equality developing at the moment and more and more great (FLINTA) collectives like Cumming or fem_pop are sprouting up, making the scene a better one. The responsibility, however, does not lie exclusively with collectives that fight for visibility and representation with a lot of effort and heart and soul.

How can FLINTA be given more visibility and reach? The responsibility does not lie primarily with the aforementioned collectives, but above all with labels, venues and other institutions. In 2022, with a broad awareness of the issue, it cannot be solely in the hands of the oppressed to achieve equality. Until then: Unite & fight!

What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you while performing? I made music with my parents and it was cool!

How would you describe the Düsseldorf music scene? The daisy among the shadowy plants.

Where do you hang out in Düsseldorf? In the woods in and around Düsseldorf, at R4 for a coffee and quite often at the zakk.

Who would you like to have a beer with? I would like to have a place like the Stone in Düsseldorf again, where indie and rock is played. Then I would also have a beer with myself. Alternatively with Susanne Ciani.
