Schon seit Kindertagen sammelt Janice Geelen schöne Dinge und hat dabei vor allem ein Herz für ausgefallene Raritäten. Kein Wunder also, dass sie kaum zögerte, vor einem Jahr Vintage Paradise in der Wallstraße zu übernehmen, einen der ältesten Second Hand Stores der Stadt. Mit ihrem kreativen Händchen für Dekoration und Styling hat die Halbjapanerin dem Geschäft ihren ganz persönlichen Stil beigemischt und schaffte einen Spagat zwischen Klassik, Kitsch und Kimonos. Und der ist extrem instagramable. Hinter einem kleinen Schaufenster in unserer Düsseldorfer Lieblingsgasse versteckt sich eine inspirierende Welt für Vintage-Lover: The Mintage.

Wie bist du zur Ladenbesitzerin geworden? Vintage Paradise gehörte ursprünglich einem betagten Mann, bei dem ich hin und wieder ausgeholfen habe. Dann wurde der Laden verkauft. Als meine Vorbesitzerin ihn überraschenderweise aufgeben wollte, wurde ich als Nachfolgerin vorgeschlagen. Ich habe sofort Ja gesagt. Ich hatte gleich die Vision, was man alles daraus machen könnte und wie ich dem Store meine persönliche Handschrift verleihen will.

Hast du viel verändert? So einiges. Ich habe den Laden mit dem gesamten Inventar übernommen und dann Schritt für Schritt meinen eigenen Klamotten-Fundus drunter gemischt. Der vordere Bereich war sehr dunkel, gedrungen und bis zur Decke vollgestellt mit massiven Holzregalen. Ich wollte ihn in Abgrenzung zu meiner recht klassischen Herrenabteilung unbedingt hell und offen gestalten und neu streichen. Ich liebe Pastellfarben und suchte einen Farbton, der unisex ist. So kam Mint ins Spiel. Daraus entstand dann auch der Name The Mintage.

Wie entstand deine Leidenschaft für Vintage? Die Liebe zu Dekoration, Antikem und Kitsch habe ich in die Wiege gelegt bekommen. Meine Eltern leben wie in einem Museum, denn mein Vater ist Antiquitätensammler und restauriert alte Bilder. Von ihm habe ich auch die Leidenschaft für besondere Schätze und einen Hang zum Verschönern. Ich habe immer schon gerne gesammelt. Keine bestimmten Dinge oder Stile, sondern einfach alles, was ich schön finde. Mode, Schmuck, Bilder, ausgefallene Deko-Objekte. All das kann ich in meinem Store wunderbar ausleben. 

Woher bekommst du deine Fundstücke? Ich verkaufe tatsächlich so gut wie alles – von der Haarspange zum Cocktailkleid, vom Sneaker bis zum kompletten Herrenanzug. Ich beziehe sehr viel klassische Vintage-Ware aus den USA, allen voran aus den 60er bis 80er Jahren. Aber ebenso von Privatpersonen, die mir ihre Kleidung verkaufen oder ihre persönliche Sammlung überlassen. Mein Sortiment teilt sich im Grunde auf in drei Segmente: Klassische Vintage-Ware, Second Hand Designer-Kleidung und neue Designerbrands. Zum Beispiel die tollen, aufwändig bestickten Jacken des Labels Cold Cocained Heart. 

Was ist denn gerade besonders gefragt? Momentan fragen alle nach Collegejacken. Aber auch Lederjacken und tolle feminine Kleider und Blusen laufen gut. Daneben verkaufe ich wunderschöne alte Kimonos aus Japan, die extrem begehrt sind. Als Halbjapanerin freue ich mich darüber ganz besonders, so kann ich eine Brücke zu meiner Kultur schlagen.

Was sind deine Lieblingsstücke? Ich hänge an jedem einzelnen Teil. Und ich liebe jede einzelne Dekade, ob 60er, 70er oder 80er. Ganz persönlich mische ich ausgewählte Kleidungsstücke aus dieser Zeit gerne mit aktuellen Teilen.

Janice Geelen started collecting beautiful things as a child and unusual rarities are especially close to her heart. So it isn’t really surprising that, last year, she jumped at the opportunity to take on Vintage Paradise in Wallstrasse, one of the longest-running second-hand shops in the city.  Having a knack for decoration and styling, the German-Japanese added her very own, personal note to the shop and has managed to strike the perfect balance between classic, kitsch and kimonos. It’s basically perfect for Instagram. Behind a little shop window in one of our favourite alleys in Düsseldorf hides a little world of inspiration for vintage lovers: The Mintage. 

How did you become a shop owner? Vintage Paradise used to be run by an older gentleman and I used to help out there occasionally. Then the shop was sold. When the subsequent owner decided, surprisingly, to give it up, I was suggested as successor – I said yes at once. I immediately had this vision of what I could make of it and how I could give the shop my personal touch.

Did you change a lot of things? Quite a bit. I took over the shop with its entire stock and then, bit by bit, mixed it up by adding pieces from my personal collection. The space at the front was very dark and squat and was crammed to the ceiling with huge wooden shelves. I wanted to turn it into a bright and airy space and give it a new lick of paint in order to create a clear division to my more classic men’s collection. I love pastel colours and was looking for a colour that is unisex. This is how the colour mint came into play. 

Where does this passion for vintage come from? The love for decoration, antiques and kitsch is basically in my genes. My parents’ place is like a museum, as my father is an antiques dealer and restores old paintings. My passion for unique treasures and the tendency to beautify things are from his side, too. I have always been an avid collector. Not of particular things or styles, but simply everything I find beautiful. Fashion, jewellery, pictures, unusual décor objects – all this I am able to act out to my heart’s content through my shop.

Where do you source your stock from? Actually, I sell just about everything – be it hair slides or cocktail dresses, trainers or a full men’s suit. I source a lot of classic vintage merchandise from the US, in particular stuff from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. But I also get stuff from people, who either sell their clothes to me or leave their entire collection to me. My range can basically be divided into three product lines: classic vintage, second-hand designer clothes and new designer brands. For example the amazing, elaborately embroidered jackets by the label Cold Cocained Heart.

So what is currently popular? At the moment everyone is after varsity jackets. But also leather jackets and amazing, very feminine dresses and blouses are doing well. At the same time, I also sell beautiful, old kimonos from Japan which are very sought after. Being half Japanese myself I am particularly happy to forge links with my culture.

What are your favourite pieces? Each and every item is my favourite! And I love each decade, the ‘60s, ‘70s or’ 80s. Personally, I like to combine chosen items hailing from those eras with current fashion.
